MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee men's golf team will get the fall season underway today and Tuesday at the 2004 Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic in Denton, Texas. The 54-hole event will take place at the Lantana Golf Club.

The 14-team field will be comprised of Arkansas State, Arkansas-Little Rock, Houston, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Lafayette, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Oral Roberts, Rhode Island, Sam Houston, Stephen F. Austin, Texas State, Texas-San Antonio, and Western Kentucky.

"The field is pretty strong and we will be seeing a lot of western teams who we do not see a lot during the course of the year," Head Coach Johnny Moore said. "It's a good tournament to get the year started because it's a good mix of league schools and teams that have excellent programs in other conferences."

A young, but experienced group will represent the Blue Raiders in the season's opening tournament. Senior Blake Bivens (Etowah, Tenn.), juniors Josh Nelms (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Patrick McLennan (Old Snowmass, Colo.), and freshmen Nick Bailes (Cleveland, Tenn.) and Brandon Burris (White House, Tenn.) all earned a spot in the lineup this week following a 90-hole qualifying tournament.

Bivens led all qualifiers with a cumulative total of 8-under par, while McLennan and Bailes posted a score of 5-under par.

"This team has a lot of talent and they are ready to play," said Moore. "They all worked hard over the summer and came back in great shape. The biggest thing they will have to adjust to is playing team golf. During the summer it has all been individual tournaments and your mindset is different. It will take a little time but they will be okay. This is a very competitive and hungry group."

The Blue Raiders will play four of their five fall tournaments in successive weeks before concluding the fall campaign on Nov. 1-2 at the USA Fall Beach Classic. Following the season opener, MT will compete in the Raising Cane Classic in Hattiesburg, Miss. On Oct. 20-21.
