No. 38 Miss. State Holds Off Lady RaidersMay 15, 2001 · MT Media Relations
Venter and Inge Weirich were the last two matches on the court with Miss. State leading 3-2. Werich came from a set down to defeat Yumi Ueda 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, but the deciding match went to the Lady Bulldogs. Venter, who had not lost a match since Feb. 8, moved up to the No. 2 position in the line-up for the first time this season. After losing the first set, Venter forced a third and deciding set but Soubis battled back to win the match 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
The Lady Raiders got off to a strong start winning two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Manon Kruse and Stacy Varnell continued to play well winning their fifth straight match on the season over Soubis and Claudia Oliveira at the No. 1 position, 8-4. Venter and Weirich also won by an 8-4 count at No. 3 over Ueda and Linda Mattsson.
Middle Tennessee's only other singles win came from Manon Kruse, who earned her first win over a ranked opponent since her very first collegiate match last September, as she knocked off No. 81 Amelie Detriviere in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
With the loss, the Lady Raiders' hopes of a second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament will now rest on their ability to win the Sun Belt Conference tournament to receive the automatic bid. The Lady Raiders have one regular season match remaining with a trip to Atlanta to face Georiga State on Thursday.
