Baseball Releases 2005 Schedule

September 27, 2004 · MT Media Relations
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee head baseball coach Steve Peterson announced the 2005 baseball schedule on Monday, a slate that includes 30 home games at Reese Smith Field.

The Blue Raiders open the season February 18-20 against Ball State, with 11 of the first 17 games of the season at home. The 30 home dates are the second most in school history.

"The Middle Tennessee community has always supported our program, and I think we've put together a schedule they'll find fun to watch," Peterson said.

Middle Tennessee plays three teams that participated in last year's NCAA Tournament, including a home weekend series versus Jacksonville State (March 11-13), a Sun Belt series at Western Kentucky (April 15-17) and home-and-home dates with Vanderbilt (April 26, May 11). The Blue Raiders also host conference series against New Orleans, South Alabama, Florida International and New Mexico State, and visit Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State and Louisiana-Lafayette.

"Last year we set a single-game attendance record and a season-attendance record. The four conference series we have at home should be good games and help us make a run at those attendance records," Peterson said.

After opening at home, the Blue Raiders go on the road for a tournament in Dothan, Ala., facing Ohio State, Iowa and host Troy.

"This is a really good tournament and I've been trying to get into it for years and it finally worked out," Peterson said. "Ohio State is perennially one of the top teams in the Big 10."

The Blue Raiders also play home-and-home series versus Memphis, Tennessee Tech, Austin Peay, Belmont and Lipscomb. Added to the schedule for 2005 is Cumberland University, the 2004 NAIA national champion.

"We used to play Cumberland every year, but when everybody started concentrating on RPI and playing nothing but Division I programs, we stopped," Peterson said. "When we stopped (in 2001), I told coach (Woody) Hunt I wanted to work something out when we could. We're going to play them (April 3) during our open weekend."

Also scheduled for trips to Reese Smith Field are Southeastern Louisiana and Southern Illinois.
