Blue Raiders fall to Ohio 3-0

Middle Tennessee will regroup for Xavier on Friday

ATHENS, Ohio - No. 13 Middle Tennessee lost its first match of the 2008 season as Ohio took the match 3-0 on Thursday night.

The Blue Raiders (9-1) hit in the negative as a team, -0.44, with 26 kills and 30 errors. Middle Tennessee also had just six team blocks compared to 14 by Ohio.

Sophomore Izabela Kozon led Middle Tennessee at the net with 10 kills as she hit just .217 in the match. Senior Ashley Asberry notched six kills for the Blue Raiders but posted a hitting percentage of .133 in the match.

"We did not show up to play tonight. It was evident once we began to play and Ohio was ready for us. We did not do anything well tonight and will have to regroup before tomorrow's match," head coach Matt Peck said.

Ohio led Middle Tennessee in every category throughout the match and as a team had 30 kills with just 16 attack errors for a .169 hitting percentage. The Bobcats also had six service aces to zero for Middle Tennessee.

Middle Tennessee trailed 9-4 early in the first set with the Bobcats after an ace and an attach error by the Blue Raiders. Ohio would extend its lead to nine after another reception error by Middle Tennessee and a number of hitting errors.

The Blue Raiders were never able to recover dropping the set 25-13 after committing 12 attack errors and three reception errors. Middle Tennessee only notched six kills in the set as Ohio had eight with just five hitting errors.

The Blue Raiders were able to keep the second set close and trailed by two 15-13 midway through. Ohio began to rally and quickly jumped out to a six-point lead, 19-13.

At the end of two sets Middle Tennessee had committed 24 attack errors, four receptions errors, two block errors and were hitting -.183 with five total blocks. Ohio had 14 team blocks with just 10 attack errors and a hitting percentage of .145.

To begin the third set, the Blue Raiders battled keeping the set within one before pulling ahead by two, 14-12. Middle Tennessee was then outscored 7-1 as Ohio took a large lead, 19-15. Ohio continued to capitalize on the Blue Raiders' mistakes as it had throughout the match and took the match 25-22 on a kill by Meghan Simmons.

The Blue Raiders will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. when it faces Xavier in Cincinnati, Ohio.
