Blue Raiders Take All Five First-Day Matches

September 14, 2001 · MT Media Relations
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee men's tennis team boasted a perfect 5-0 mark in Round of 16 play Friday, including third-seed Oliver Foreman taking a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Adriano Cipriana of Freed-Hardeman University, to begin play in the MT Men's Fall Invitational at Buck Bouldin Tennis Center.

Brackets were redrawn late Thursday night after several teams pulled out due to this week's unfortunate terrorist attacks in New York City. The field was reduced from 80 singles players to just 53, while doubles went from 31 to 18 squads.

Foreman took little time in picking up his first win of the season, while teammates Kirk Jackson and Trevor Short followed suit with straight set victories in Flight I singles play. Jackson defeated David Plasencia of Freed-Hardeman, 7-5, 6-2, while Short took care of Julian Botero of Southern Illinois, 6-3, 6-2.

Jackson advances to play the tourney's top seed, Mariano Pettigrosso of Arkansas-Little Rock, at 9 a.m. Saturday. Foreman also plays at 9 a.m. Saturday against Alexi Poutchinets of Arkansas-Little Rock, a 6-2, 7-6 (5) winner over Alan Savidor of Southern Illinois. Short plays at 10 a.m. against Morehead State's Benjamin Schmid, a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 winner over Peter Bong of Southern Illinois.

Blue Raider Michael Staniak led 4-1 and 5-2 in the second set after winning the opening set 6-4. But Liciano Diez of Arkansas-Little Rock would not go away, battling back and winning the second set in a tiebreaker, 8-6. But Diez ran out of gas after the tiebreaker, and Staniak took the final set, 6-0, to advance to quarterfinal play Saturday against Simon Rea of Tennessee. Rea defeated Gustavo Andrade of Freed-Hardeman, 6-3, 6-2 on Friday.

MT freshman Greg Pollack defeated Marek Pawelec of Morehead State, 6-3, 6-4, in Flight II singles action, advancing to a 10 a.m. match Saturday against Richard Booth of Southern Illinois. Booth defeated Dewit Stegman of UT-Martin, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Pollack is the only Blue Raider in Flight II of the singles draw.

In doubles action, all three Blue Raider teams drew a first-round bye and will take part in quarterfinal action Saturday afternoon. Daniel Klemetz and Short take on Clemens Klein and Anthony Wollsschlager of Evansville, while Foreman and Jackson will battle against Cipriana and Andrade of Freed-Hardeman. The final doubles pairing for coach Dale Short's squad in this opening tournament of the fall season, Pollack and Staniak, play Mithu Murali and Pettigrosso. All three doubles teams will be in action at 3 p.m.

Play continues Saturday with singles play beginning at 9 a.m. at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center, and wraps up Sunday with semifinals and finals action.
