Cowden fought hard throughout the match before falling to Jorge Rodriquez of Ball State in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
Junior Alex McCann received a bye in the first round but will begin play on Saturday morning at 8 a.m.
McCann will play Patrick Bandy of Kentucky in the second round. Bandy defeated Scott McCormick of Wichita State 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the second round.
Results of the ITA All-American Championships will be posted on www.goblueraiders.com when they become available.
