Blue Raider Soccer Playing For SBC Championship

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee's soccer team will play for the program's first-ever Sun Belt championship when it entertains Louisiana-Lafayette Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Blue Raiders (11-4-1, 5-1-1 SBC) enter Sunday's match tied atop the league standings with North Texas, which is playing host to Florida International Sunday at 1 p.m.

"This is what you play, the opportunity to win a championship," said senior forward Laura Miguez. "It's going to be a special day, and I'm proud of the team for putting itself in this situation. We've put in a lot of work to have this chance and now we have to try and make the most of it."

If both Middle Tennessee and North Texas win they will be considered co-champions but the Blue Raiders will earn the No. 1 seed in next week's Aeropostale Sun Belt Championships in Miami, based on its double-overtime win at Denver. The Mean Green lost at Denver, the No. 3 team in the standings.

A Middle Tennessee win, coupled with a North Texas loss, would give the Blue Raiders the outright championship. Middle Tennessee, which started its soccer program in 1996, joined the Sun Belt in 2000.

Middle Tennessee's five seniors - Debs Brereton, Ashley Elliott, Danielle LaDuke, Laura Miguez and Jessica Northcutt - will be honored during pregame ceremonies at 1:45 p.m.
