KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Middle Tennessee put together its best round of the tournament, shooting 308 in Tuesday's final round at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Intercollegiate but it wasn't enough to hold make a run against a field of teams that also enjoyed solid third rounds. As a result, Middle Tennessee finished 19th in the 43-team, three-day event.
Murfreesboro native Leigh Wilkins completed a strong tournament by playing the final round at even par to finish tied for 14th overall (amongst a 215 player field) with a 9-over 225. Wilkins improved her scores in each round and rallied impressively after a disappointing 80 in Sunday's opening round.
"I put that first round behind me and stayed composed," Wilkins said. "I realized there were two rounds left and I needed to come back in those and help the team. I was able to manage the course and get through some tough conditions. I was really pleased to come back and shoot 72 in the final round because it was on the same course where I shot the (80 Sunday). I left some shots out there Sunday but I was able to capitalize today."
Newcomer Hannah Weathersby, a Mississippi State transfer, finished tied for 66th and was Middle Tennessee's second lowest scorer. She shot 19-over 235 for the tournament, followed by Karisa Akin and Clara Leathers tied for 87th at 22-over 238. Mallory Bishop finished at 243.
The Blue Raiders will play in the USA Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate March 2-3.
