MT falls to Bisons 9-7
Brentz, Hines lead team at plate
March 24, 2009 · MT Athletic CommunicationsJunior Tyler Hyde took the loss as he allowed all four runs in the eighth including a double and a home run. Hyde worked 1.2 innings allowing four runs on two hits with three strikeouts.
Middle Tennessee (17-4) used five pitchers in the game with freshman Brett Wilson receiving the start. Wilson worked 4.1 innings allowing five runs on six hits with four strikeouts.
"We weren't very good out of the bullpen tonight and then Wilson did not get a lot of support defensively," head coach Steve Peterson said. "The best playing offense won today and while we had opportunities but didn't get the hit we needed to score runs."
Middle Tennessee did post double-digit hits with 13 but left 10 runners on base in the loss.
The Blue Raiders were led at the plate by sophomore Bryce Brentz and senior Nathan Hines who each had three hits in the game. Brentz had a home run while Hines had a double as they accounted for two of Middle Tennessee's four extra base hits.
Lipscomb (12-10) scored first on a single allowing the runner from second to score in the second inning.
Middle Tennessee rebounded in the fourth putting a couple of run on the board to take a 2-1 lead. Bishop walked, stole second and reached third on a throwing error by the catcher. Bishop then scored on a double to centerfield by Hines. Hines scored on a single to centerfield by Meinhart after reaching third on a wild pitch.
The Bisons scored in the fifth to tie the score at two as Bolden scored on a single by Williams after receiving a leadoff walk to reach base. Sanders then hit a three-run shot to left center to hand Lipscomb a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth.
Middle Tennessee quickly answered as McDade hit a two-run shot to right field cutting the Bison lead to one.
Brentz hit his ninth home run of the season to left field in the top of the seventh to tie the game at five.
Lipscomb scored two runs on a double to right field by Butler with two outs to break the tie taking a 7-5 lead. Then a two run home run to left field by Nickerson extended the lead to four in the. The Bisons scored four runs on two hits in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead.
The Blue Raiders added two runs in the ninth in a double to centerfield by Meinhart.
The Blue Raiders will be back in action on Wednesday, March 25 at 6 p.m. when it faces Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, Tenn.
