MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee men's tennis coach David McNamara has been named Sun Belt Coach of the Year as announced by the league office on Tuesday.
McNamara led the Blue Raiders to a 16-9 regular season record and to the Sun Belt Championship title in 2009. Middle Tennessee posted wins over ranked opponents including Old Dominion, BYU and Denver while dealing with a number of injuries during the season.
"I am extremely honored to be named Coach of the Year because this award is voted on by the other coaches. To be respected by your peers means a lot and is something you want when you are a new coach to the league," McNamara said.
The Blue Raiders' Sun Belt tournament title earned them an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament which will begin May 8-10.
The Middle Tennessee men's tennis team will gather at Toot's in Murfreesboro, Tenn., on Tuesday, April 28 to watch the NCAA Selection show on ESPNews.
The Blue Raiders received an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament after defeating Florida Atlantic 4-1 in the title match of the Sun Belt Championships.
The Blue Raiders will meet at Toot's at 4 p.m. with the NCAA Selection Show on ESPNews set to begin at 4:20 p.m.
Members of the community are invited to come to Toots and support the Blue Raiders as they see where they will begin post-season play.
After winning the Sun Belt Championships, the Blue Raiders have moved to 56th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll released on Tuesday which is four spots higher than they were in the poll a week ago.
Senior Robert McKenzie moved to 90th in the poll while sophomore John Peers is now 100th in the singles rankings. The pair are also 36th in the doubles rankings while Peers and junior Victor Melo are ranked 50th in doubles.
