Soccer Alumni Game Set For SaturdayApril 22, 2005 · MT Media Relations
Middle Tennessee's defending Sun Belt Conference championship team will take the field against Blue Raider soccer alums, including Emily Carter, Sarah Schulz, Kenya Hickey, Lindsay Henderson, Rachael Sulkers, Megan Holsten, Christina Mascaro, Melissa Funke, and Brooke Ward. These are players who have confirmed they will participate and others players from previous teams also could make appearances if schedules permit.
"It's great to have so many alumni back for this game and on our campus once again," Middle Tennessee Head Soccer Coach Aston Rhoden said. "Many of them were stellar players and some were pioneers for our program. It will be great for them to see how far we have progressed due to their early efforts."
Carter (2000-03) is second on the career lists for points (52) and goals (23) at Middle Tennessee, and she is tied for first in game-winning goals (7). Hickey (1997-00) is tied for fifth in career points (32) and goals (14) and also is among individual season record holders in several categories. Mascaro (2002-03) is tied for third in career assists with 10 and is among individual season record holders in the category, so several of the returning alums not only played their collegiate soccer at Middle Tennessee, but they also left their mark among the best to ever participate for the Blue Raiders.
Still, the game is one of pride and the current players don't want to be showed up by their elders.
"The game should be a lot of fun," Rhoden said. "There's been a lot of talk amongst both teams for a few weeks now. The alumni's experience will no doubt present a strong challenge for our players. Hopefully our youth (fitness) will create problems for them."
There will be a social for the alumni following the game at La Siesa on Greenland Drive. In the event of inclement weather, the Alumni Game will be moved to the Middle Tennessee Recreation Center.
