September 27, 2001 · MT Media Relations
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee concludes a school-record long five-game homestand when the Blue Raiders host Florida International Friday and Lipscomb Sunday at the Blue Raider Soccer Field.

Friday's 4 p.m. match against the Panthers of Florida International will be the Sun Belt opener for both schools. FIU enters the match 4-1 after a 2-1 overtime victory over 14th-ranked Miami (FL) last week. FIU has won four straight matches since dropping its season-opener at Hofstra. The Panthers and Blue Raiders have met just once previously, a 4-0 FIU victory last September in Miami.

The Blue Raiders and Lipscomb will meet for the first time on the soccer field. The Lady Bison enter the match 0-7-0 after dropping a 3-0 decision to Samford last week.

MT split a pair of matches over the weekend and dropped Murray State during the midweek in preparation for the conference opener. The Blue Raiders defeated SEC foe Alabama, 2-1, last Saturday. Lisa Langrish got the Blue Raiders on the board, converting a penalty kick in the 29th minute. MT held a 2-0 halftime lead after Emily Carter scored her first goal of the season in the 39th minute. The Blue Raiders held off a late charge from the visiting Crimson Tide to take the victory, the program's first over an SEC opponent in six tries.

The Blue Raiders dropped Sunday's match to Eastern Illinois, 2-1, in a hard-fought struggle for both squads. EIU scored in the eighth minute of play and controlled most of the action for the match, but MT tied the score midway through the second half. Sophomore Lindsey Bopp, who tallied an assist in both games for the weekend, fed freshman Ashley Hicks with a cross and Hicks scored her first career goal. But the visiting Panthers netted the game-winner in the 81st minute to take the road victory.

Carter scored twice in the second half and freshman Laura Miguez tallied the first goal of her career in a 3-0 win against Murray State on Tuesday. Miguez gave the Blue Raiders a 1-0 lead in the opening half when she controlled a ball to the left of the net after a scramble and placed it into the back of the net in the 27th minute.

Carter added to the score midway through the second half. The Evansville, Ind., product took a shot from close range that was saved, but Carter put the rebound into the back of the net in the 69th minute for a two-goal Blue Raider advantage. Carter's second goal of the match and third in the last three games came in the 84th minute, when she took an out-of-bounds throw from teammate Megan McGregor and put it in the net for the 3-0 MT lead.
