MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Head Coach Rick Stockstill welcomed 105 veterans and newcomers Sunday as the team officially reported for the start of fall drills. The first official practice is set for Monday at 3:45 PM and is open to the public.

"I am very excited to get practice underway and so is our staff and players," Stockstill said. "I really love the attitude of our team right now and they seem hungry and anxious. There is a nice buzz around the team and I can't wait to get things cranked up Monday."

The freshmen and transfers spent most of the day in academic orientation meetings Sunday before taking photos and physicals later in the afternoon. Following dinner, Stockstill held a senior meeting, followed by a team meeting, before calling it a day.

The NCAA's mandatory acclimatization period will begin with Monday's practice and will conclude with Friday's drills. The first scrimmage will be Aug. 15.

"Instead of looking at fall camp as three weeks this year, I am going to break it down into three segments," said Stockstill. "The first segment will be about assignments, fundamentals, and conditioning. When you are in shorts for four of your first five practices it only makes sense to emphasize fundamentals while learning the offense, defense, and special teams. It will also allow us to teach practicing fast and with great tempo.

"The second segment will be the toughness part as the pads will be on by this time. The second week is also a time when kids get tired so you really see who your tough guys are and how they bounce back. The final segment is what I call confidence and perfection. By this time everyone should know what to do and should be preparing themselves mentally for the season and the only way to achieve confidence is through success."

A total of 44 lettermen and 17 starters highlighted the list of players reporting to camp Sunday, while 25 newcomers and eight invited walk-ons were also a part of the group.

Due to injuries suffered in the spring and summer, junior defensive end Jarrett Crittenton and freshman Tavarres Jefferson will not be available for the start of drills. Crittenton may not return until mid-season while Jefferson could be out anywhere from two to four weeks.

The Blue Raiders will open the 2009 season on the road against ACC foe Clemson, September 5. Kickoff is slated for 5:00 PM CST.
