MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Middle Tennessee has inked Riverdale standout Justin Jones to a national letter-of-intent, announced Wednesday by associate head coach Jim McGuire.

Jones, the Daily News Journal Position Player of the Year and Male Athlete of the Year, leads the District 7-AAA regular season champion Warriors with a .423 batting average and is second on the club in slugging percentage (.649). He has 10 doubles, 30 RBIs and 33 runs scored.

Jones was an all-state center for the state champion football squad in the fall and was named to both The Associated Press and Tennessee Sports Writers Association Class 5A team. He will graduate next week as the class valedictorian with a 4.0 grade-point-average and join former teammates Wayne Kendrick, Matt Campbell and Alex Watson as Blue Raiders.

"With Jones we saw a guy that has really improved over the last couple of years," McGuire said. "He's coming into his own . We knew what he could do in football, and he's a great student."

Middle Tennessee takes on Vanderbilt tonight in Nashville at 6 p.m. before hitting the road to face Louisiana-Lafayette this weekend in Sun Belt action.
