Pulls out upset win to advance
October 8, 2009 · MT Athletic CommunicationsJohn Peers pulled out an upset win to begin the main draw of the ITA All-American tournament on Thursday afternoon.
Peers defeated Chase Buchanan of Ohio State 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to open play in the main draw. Buchanan was the No. 1 junior in the United State last season and competed as an amateur in the main draw of the U.S. Open.
"John kept his composure and was very mature throughout the match. He went through some tough physical situations that two years ago he may not have been able to get through," head coach David McNamara said. "He was able to pull it out and played great. John deserved to win and I am looking forward to seeing him play tomorrow."
Peers will face the winner of Bradley Klhan, seeded 14th, of Stanford and Oklahoma's Costin Pavel in the round of 32 on Friday.
Peers and teammate Victor Melo, ranked 22 in the ITA poll, fell 8-6 to Arkansas' Dmitry Lebedev and Chris Nott, No. 43, in the opening round of main draw doubles.
The pair will begin play in the doubles consolation bracket on Friday.
Results from the Blue Raiders' matches at the ITA All-American will be posted on goblueraiders.com when they are available.
