NEW ORLEANS - Senior Ashley Waugh has been named Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week by the league office announced on Monday afternoon.
The Indianapolis, Ind., native began the weekend by recording the 1,000th dig of her career in Middle Tennessee's hard-fought 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-15, 15-13) win over league foe Arkansas State. Waugh notched 19 digs averaging 3.80 per set against the Red Wolves.
In the Blue Raiders' two matches, Waugh averaged 4.62 digs per set with 37 total digs. Waugh led a backcourt defense that averaged 15.50 digs per set on the weekend with a total of 124 digs.
"This is a much deserved award for Ashley, who I feel is one of the premier passers and defenders in conference. She means so much to our team and we especially recognized that when she missed a few matches due to an injury and we lost five matches with her out of the line-up," head coach Matt Peck said.
Against UALR on Sunday, Waugh registered a team high 18 digs as she guided the Middle Tennessee backcourt and the squad to a decisive 3-0 (28-26, 25-16, 27-25) victory.
This is the fifth time Waugh has been awarded the honor as she was named Defensive Player of the Week four times during the 2008 season.
Middle Tennessee will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 16 when it plays host to North Texas at 7 p.m. Then on Sunday, Oct. 18 the Blue Raiders will face one of the top teams in the Sun Belt West Division Denver at 1 p.m.
