Blue Raiders Survive Scare With 3-2 Win Over IUPUI

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee volleyball (7-1) survived a scare after starting out slow and came back strong to defeat IUPUI (3-3) 3-2 (28-30, 30-22, 30-21, 28-30, 15-10) Friday at the Blue Raider Bash Tournament in the Alumni Memorial Gym.

The Blue Raiders suffered through a sluggish first game, as the team could only muster a .070 hitting percentage, and allowed the Jaguars to slip by with a 30-28 win. Middle Tennessee roared back in the second game, committing only three errors and hitting a scorching .361 to tie up the match at one game each.

Middle Tennessee took the lead by winning game three continuing to play almost error free, as the team only committed five errors. When it seemed like the Blue Raiders would coast through game four to take the match, the Jaguars put a stop to their plans by taking game four. The Blue Raiders assisted in IUPUI's success with 12 errors in the match to allow the Jaguars to take game four 30-28.

The Blue Raiders came out in game five with a renewed determination. With 21 total attacks and just three errors, Middle Tennessee extended its winning streak to six with a 15-10 victory in the final game of the match.

IUPUI stayed in the match thanks to 12 Blue Raider service errors and a total of 32 attack errors. Middle Tennessee stayed in the match thanks to four players who recorded double figure kills during the course of the match.

Junior Andress Lyra led both squads with 21 kills and also had 13 digs for a double double. Victoria Monasterolo also had a big night with 14 kills while Lindsay Sisco and Ashley Adams followed with 13 and 11 respectively. Setter Megan Sumrell racked up 57 assists in the match.

Middle Tennessee returns to action on Saturday when the Blue Raiders face UT Martin in the squad's second match in the Blue Raider Bash. The Blue Raiders wrap up the day at 5 p.m. when the team takes on Tennessee Tech at 5 p.m.
