MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The American Baseball Coaches Association will honor Middle Tennessee head baseball coach Steve Peterson as one of its top coaches in 2009 on Friday night.

Peterson will be recognized at the annual Hall of Fame and Coach of the Year banquet which is held in conjunction with the ABCA's annual convention. The Blue Raider skipper was named the South Central Region Coach of the Year after guiding Middle Tennessee to a 44-18 overall record in 2009.

The team won the Sun Belt regular season and tournament titles while breaking a number of records, including wins in a season, and making its 14th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

"It was the right place and the right time. We had a good year last year and this honor is the result of a successful coaching staff, team and organization," Peterson said. "There are a number of coaches who had the same situations but they selected me and I'll take it on behalf of the things I listed before."

It is the first time Peterson has received ABCA Region Coach of the Year honors during his 22-year tenure. Peterson has been named league Coach of the Year three times while winning 11 conference regular season titles, nine conference tournament championships and appearing in nine NCAA Regionals.

Middle Tennessee will open the 2010 season on Friday, Feb. 19 in a three-game series with Memphis at Memphis, Tenn.
