Guillou, Dell, Comstock Lead Harriers Again
MT Media Relations

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Jonathan Guillou, Derek Dell and Ashley Comstock all finished in the Top 15 Saturday morning, leading Middle Tennessee's cross country teams at the Dr. Mark Allen Old Timers Classic at Kereiakes Park in Bowling Green, Ky.

Guillou and Dell were 10th and 11th, respectively, for the men, finishing seventh and eighth among collegiate runners on the five-mile course. Guillou's time of 26:20.80 was exactly one second faster than Dell. The usual third member of the men's team, Steve Safstrom, missed the race because of illness.

"Jonathan and Derek ran very solid races because they were in there with all of the Kenyans from Eastern and Western Kentucky," head coach Dean Hayes said. "It was quite a battle. It gave them a chance to see what Western Kentucky would be like [at the conference championships]."

The remainder of the men's finishers were as follows: Matthew Young (30th, 29:56.90), Luke Pfleger (35th, 31:50.80) and Ryan Hood (36th, 33:28.10).

Comstock and fellow freshman Kaitlyn Hammond were the top finishers again for the women, placing 15th (18:39.00) and 19th (18:54.30), respectively. Sara Lunning, Marjorie Gombert and Miranda Galloway were 31st, 32nd and 33rd, respectively, with times of 19:50.20, 19:51.50 and 20:07.10. Hayes said Gombert ran especially strong.

"Ashley Comstock and Kaitlyn Hammond really ran well and were right up there with the leaders, but the race of the day belonged to Marjorie Gombert," Hayes said. "She ran probably her best race since she's been at Middle Tennessee. It also showed the women they can hang with Western, and Western is the defending conference champions."

Both teams take next week off before taking part in the Arkansas State Invitational in Jonesboro, Ark., on October 1.
