NEW ORLEANS - Middle Tennessee's Brittany Cox was announced as the February 2 Sun Belt Female Field Athlete of the Week by the conference office. It marks the second consecutive week the senior has received the honor.
Cox garnered the award by breaking both the Sun Belt and Middle Tennessee records in both the 20-pound weight throw and shot put at last weekend's Rod McCravy Memorial meet in Lexington, Ky.
Her record-breaking toss of 66-8.75 (20.34m) in the weight throw came on her first throw of final round and smashed her own SBC and MT standard by almost four feet. She took third in the event and earned an NCAA Provisional qualifying mark that ranks her sixth in the NCAA this season.
In the shot put, her throw of 52-10.75 (16.21m) came on the last toss of the final round to place her second in the event and pass Louisiana Tech's Melissa Gibbon league standard of 50-10.75 (15.51m), thrown nine years ago. It earned Cox her second NCAA Provisional qualifier in the event this year and placed her 10th on the NCAA descending order list.
As a result of Cox's stellar senior indoor campaign, the Middle Tennessee women's team has earned a top 30 slot in the USTFCCCA weekly poll, coming in 29th. Along with the NCAA qualifying performances of Zamzam Sangau, Cherice Robertson and Sarah Nambawa, Cox and the Blue Raiders have moved up six spots from last week to crack the top 30 and pass rival, 30th ranked Western Kentucky.
Cox and the rest of the men's and women's teams return to action Saturday as the Blue Raiders play host to the Middle Tennessee Classic at Murphy Center. Full results and coverage will be available on goblueraiders.com.
