MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Blue Raider head softball coach Sue Nevar has announced this weekend's Middle Tennessee Invitational will be cancelled because of the freezing temperatures and continued precipitation.
The sub-freezing temperatures and lack of sunshine have made it impossible for the field to thaw and dry enough to make the infield acceptable for the play.
"Our field is not in playable condition," said Nevar. "Unfortunately, the rain and snow has soaked the field and the temperature has not risen enough evaporate any of the frozen water in the infield. We do not want to tear up our field and risk getting players injured."
Because of the predicted snow and freezing rain expected late Monday afternoon into Tuesday morning, Nevar made the call so that the scheduled teams would be able to possibly schedule other opponents and doubleheaders later in the year.
Sun and slightly warmer temperatures are expected Friday and Saturday which could make the field playable for Sunday afternoon. If this occurs, the local teams scheduled to play in the tournament could play a doubleheader Sunday afternoon. An announcement will be made later in the week.
