Blue Raiders bounce back with impressive 276 in second round

October 10, 2005 · MT Media Relations
ST. CHARLES, Mo. - Middle Tennessee carded a season-best 276 in the second round of the Missouri Bluffs Challenge to erase a miserable opening round and jump to sixth after 36 holes. The Blue Raiders own a cumulative score of 572 and are within three shots of third place host Missouri.

Drake grabbed the 36-hole lead with a 555 with St. Louis standing in second with a 562. Missouri is in third followed by Arkansas State and DePaul who are both tied for fourth.

After the first round, Middle Tennessee was tied for last place with a 12-over par 296 then roared back on the next 18 to register its best round of the year with a 276. In fact, the 276 went down as the best round by a Blue Raider team since they recorded a 274 in the opening round of the LSU Spring Invitational in 2004.

"In all my years of coaching I have never seen a team make a 20 stroke turnaround from one round to the next," said Head Coach Johnny Moore. "I am upset with the way we opened the tournament but I am ecstatic with our play in round two. We jumped by a lot of people and hopefully we can put another solid round together on Tuesday."

Sophomore Nick Bailes led the way for Middle Tennessee with a 140 to tie for ninth overall. Bailes opened with a 73, then came back with his best round as a collegian when he recorded a 4-under par 67.

Senior Josh Nelms, who matched his career-best with a 67 in round two, is tied for 27th with a 144. Teammate Spencer Provow is also tied for 27th after tallying rounds of 70 and 74.

Newcomer Bart Barnes and true freshman Rich cochran both had a 148 to tie for 53rd overall. Barnes had a 72 in round two while Cochran shot a 70 in round two to improve by eight shots over his opening round score.

The Blue Raiders will play the third and final round on Tuesday.
