Men's Tennis Set for ITA Southeast RegionalOctober 13, 2005 · MT Media Relations
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee men's tennis team returns to action this weekend at the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional in Memphis, Tenn., the qualifying tournament for the ITA National Indoor Championships in three weeks.
The doubles tandem of Marco Born and Andreas Siljestrom, ranked 10th in the preseason and last week's winner of the first leg of the collegiate grand slam at the Polo Ralph Lauren ITA All-American Championships, will play only singles this weekend. By virtue of winning the All-American, Born-Siljestrom automatically qualify for the National Indoors and will likely be the No. 1 seed in the November 3-6 event in Columbus, Ohio.
Both players received a first-round bye in Friday's singles play, with Siljestrom, ranked 57th nationally in singles, seeded ninth for the tournament.
Siljestrom will play the winner of Central Florida's Enev Gursoy and Nicholls State's Sebastien Normand at 1:30 p.m. at the Racquet Club of Memphis. Born takes on the winner of UCF's Tarek Ben Soltane and Christopher Rea of Ole Miss at 11 a.m. at WellWorkx, another indoor facility in Memphis being used Friday only in the tournament.
The other four Middle Tennessee singles players - Kai Schledorn, Brandon Allan, Rishan Kuruppu and Greg Pollack - all play first-round matches and would need to win twice on Friday to move into the Round of 32.
Schledorn takes on James Spence of Memphis at 8 a.m. at the Racquet Club, while Allan also plays at 8, versus South Florida's Dirk Britzen. Pollack faces Tennessee's Kaden Hensel at 10:45 a.m. at WellWorkx, and Kuruppu plays one of Thursday's qualifiers at 9:45 a.m. at the Racquet Club.
Allan and Schledorn, ranked eighth in doubles, are the top seed for the 64-team main draw and do not play until Saturday at 4:30 p.m. against the winner of Rawl Martin-John Thornton (Tennessee) and Soltane-Brock Sakey (UCF).
Pollack and Kuruppu face Southeastern Louisiana's Ondrej Krivka-Vladimir Paunic at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
"Certainly with the way Marco and Andreas played last week in doubles, they have more confidence in their singles games and hopefully that will carry over this week," head coach Dale Short said. "Kai also played better in singles last week at the All-American.
"Kai and Brandon are the No. 1 seed for this tournament in doubles and really want to join their teammates at the National Indoors. But our region is very tough because there are so many good teams from the SEC and Conference USA. It's a very good field and a very tough tournament."
