Kuruppu Wins Twice on First Day

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee senior Rishan Kuruppu won a pair of singles matches Friday, leading the Blue Raiders men's tennis team at the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional in Memphis, Tenn.

Kuruppu won twice on the first day of main draw competition, including a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1, triumph in the first round over Georgia State's Jarec Twarowski. The senior then came back in the afternoon to take out Tennessee's Bobby Cameron, 7-5, 6-2. Kuruppu now plays teammate Andreas Siljestrom in the Round of 32 at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Marco Born won a second-round match over Christopher Rea of Ole Miss, 7-5, 6-2 after receiving a first-round bye. Born takes on Georgia's Matic Omerzel at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Siljestrom, ranked 57th nationally in singles, also drew a first-round bye and defeated Nicholls State's Sebastien Normand, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (8), in the second round, while Kai Schledorn won 7-5, 6-2, over James Spence of Memphis before dropping a 4-6, 4-6, decision to Mississippi State's Pierre Mouillon.

Senior Greg Pollack dropped a 6-3, 2-6, 2-6, decision to Tennessee's Kaden Hensel, while Brandon Allan lost to South Florida's Dirk Britzen, 2-6, 4-6.

Allan and Schledorn, ranked eighth in doubles, are the top seed for the 64-team main draw and play Saturday at 4:30 p.m. against Central Florida's Tarek Ben Soltane-Brock Sakey. Pollack and Kuruppu defeated Southeastern Louisiana's Ondrej Krivka-Vladimir Paunic, 8-4, in doubles Friday evening, and face Tennessee's Hensel and Ben Rogers Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
