MURFREESBORO, Tenn - Fresh off of a no-hit performance last week against Evansville, pitcher Lindsey Vander Lugt will lead the Blue Raider softball team as the squad prepares to play six games in five days including a home contest Thursday night against the Ole Miss Rebels at 6 p.m.
MT enters the week with an 8-10 overall record, 0-3 in conference. However, the team is gaining momentum having won six of their last 10 games and are riding a three game winning streak.
The six game stretch will begin Wednesday as the team travels to Jacksonville State to take on Gamecocks in doubleheader action before returning to Blue Raider Field on Thursday to take on the Ole Miss Rebels at 6 p.m. The team will then travel to Mobile, Ala. to play a conference set with South Alabama on Saturday and Sunday.
Vander Lugt, currently on a career best four game winning streak, has a miniscule ERA of 1.24 in the last four games with a strikeout to walk ratio of 20/2. Her best performance came last Tuesday when she pitched a complete game no-hitter against Evansville.
"This is a very important week for us," said head coach Sue Nevar. "Lindsey is at the top of her game and we are playing good ball at the moment. We need to continue this momentum through the week into the weekend to help even our conference record at 3-3."
The Blue Raider bats have awoken from early season slumber. In the last three weeks, the squad has improved its weekly combined batting average from .207 at Bulldog Invitational Athens, Ga. to .298 last week against the Evansville.
Natalie Ysais leads the team with an overall average of .313 and eight RBIs. Against Evansville, she pulled a towering three-run homerun over the leftfield fence for her first homer of the season.
"The hitters are seeing pitches better and being more selective at the plate. We have really been focusing on improving technique of individual batters and it is paying off. Each player is evaluating the flaws in their swing and making the necessary corrections."
Thursday's home contest against Ole Miss will be the first time the Blue Raiders have hosted the matchup at Blue Raider Field. The Rebels hold a 3-2 series advantage and took the last meeting in 2008, 4-0.
