MT Host Women's Fall Invitational

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee will host the MT Women's Fall Invitational this Friday through Sunday at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center on the MT campus, with 86 athletes from 15 schools participating in four singles and three doubles flights.

Six Lady Raiders will play in doubles, as well as three doubles teams. MT's Verena Preiss will take on the winner of Sophie DeSmet of Jacksonville State and Alba Garcia of Belmont at 2 p.m. Friday in Flight A singles action. All first and second round singles action will take place Friday.

Also in Flight A, Carien Venter plays at 10:30 a.m. versus Ball State's Melissa Roach, Stacy Varnell awaits the winner of Laura DeHaan of Belmont and Monica Gonzalez-Gordo of Memphis at 2 p.m. Varnell sports a 5-1 record after the opening two tournaments of the fall campaign.

Tanja Buchheim battles Bethany Everett of Chattanooga at 10:30 a.m. in Flight B singles play, while Michaela Gridling gets the Lady Raiders going with a 9 a.m. match versus Mississippi State's Elaine Fagan.

MT's Emily Vest will take on the winner of Katie Kelsey of Belmont and Donna Altenburger of Appalachian State at 12:30 p.m. in Flight C singles play.

In doubles action, Venter and Varnell play Judy Liwanpo and Zarinah Brown from Austin Peay at 4:30 p.m. Friday in Flight A. The pair will be playing their first match together in this fall season.

In Flight B, MT's Gridling and Preiss draw a bye in the first round and do not play until Saturday, as do teammates Vest and Buchheim in Flight C doubles action.

The tournament concludes Sunday with finals action in all flights Sunday afternoon. With rain predicted for the entire weekend, play may be moved to the Racquet Club indoor facility because of weather.
