Women's golf finishes third at UALR Women's Classic
Haggard leads Blue Raiders to record-tying performanceMarch 30, 2010 · Athletic Communications
The Blue Raiders, who led after the first two rounds, overcame a slow start, and shot a 307 to finish the tournament at 895, tying the best three round tournament score in school history.
"They came out tight today," said Head Coach Chris Adams. "The conditions were windy, and our scores took a bit of a hit. I'm proud of the way they played, and it lets our players know that they can win."
Ashley Haggard shot a 76 to finish third at 219, the sixth-best tournament score in school history. The freshman opened up the tournament with a four-under 68, which tied Taryn Durham for the fourth-best single round score in the MT record books.
"Ashley had a great tournament," said Adams. "Any time you can have a freshman in the hunt and breaking par is very encouraging. Her game is really turning around for us."
Sun Belt foe and tournament host UALR won the event. The Trojans shot a tournament-best 288 in the second round, and finished two strokes ahead of the Blue Raiders at 893. Oral Roberts finished second at 894. The field featured three other Sun Belt members in the 18-team field with Arkansas State and Troy finishing eighth and ninth, respectively. ULM finished tied for 16th.
Clara Leathers finished tied for ninth at 223, shooting a three-over 75. The finish is the highest for the senior since 2008. After tying a career-low with a 70 in the first round, Morgan Hale shot a 79 in the third to tie for 19th at 225.
Middle Tennessee will look to build on their performance this weekend when they head to Oxford, Miss. for the 2010 Rebel Intercollegiate on the campus of Ole Miss. The 19-team field features 16 teams ranked in the top 100.
