Blue Raiders unable to declaw Tigers
Bigus picks up lone MT pointApril 3, 2010 · Athletic Communications
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee women's tennis team fought hard, forcing two three-set singles matches in addition to pulling out a win at the No. 4 spot, but were unable to overcome Memphis Saturday afternoon in dropping a 6-1 decision to the host Tigers in Memphis, Tenn.
The Blue Raiders started the afternoon with an 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles where Taylor Coffey and Anna Djananova knocked off Andrea Arques-Garcia and Amanda Brown. Memphis (12-14) battled back to tie the doubles action at 1-1 with an 8-6 triumph at No. 2, setting up a battle for the point at the top position.
The singles action was just as close despite the final score. Marietta Bigus tallied the lone Middle Tennessee victory, however, with a 7-5, 7-6 (5) decision against Brown at the No. 4 slot.
Nava also went to a second-set tiebreaker in her No. 1 contest against Murdock before falling 6-3, 7-6 (2).
Nomoto and Coffey battled their opponents, Ondeck and Kelly Gray, to three-set affairs at the No. 3 and No. 5 positions, respectively.
The Blue Raiders' record drops to 8-6 with results from Friday's match against ULM still pending. The Warhawks claim a 4-3 win; however, the match is under protest and MT is awaiting a decision from the Sun Belt Conference office.
Middle Tennessee will close its away regular-season slate in its next contest, a 1 p.m. Saturday trip to Denver, Colo., to face the Denver Pioneers.
