Jackson, Miss. - The Middle Tennessee men's golf team completed the first round of the Sam Hall Intercollegiate in 13th place with a team total of 293. The tournament, hosted by Southern Mississippi, took place at the par-72, 6,900 yard Patrick Farms Golf Club.
The 16-team tournament was originally scheduled to be at the Canebrake Golf Club in Hattiesburg, Miss but had to be moved to accommodate for hotel rooms for the participating teams. The first two rounds were slated to conclude Monday, but the second round was suspended due to darkness.
South Florida opened with a 12-under 276 to take the opening-round lead while host Southern Miss and Jacksonville State are tied for second with a 9-under par 279. Mercer stood in fourth after a first-round 280 (8-under), while Nebraska was fifth with a 5-under 283.
Senior Josh Nelms led the way for Middle Tennessee with a 1-under par 71 to tie for 25th. Nelms closed with a 34 on the back nine holes.
Junior Derrick Bright, playing as an individual, is tied for 35th after carding an even-par 72.
The Blue Raiders' leading golfer this fall has been transfer Spencer Provow. The former Oakland High School star is tied for 61st after registering a 75. True freshman Rich Cochran also managed a 75 and is tied for 61st with Provow.
Following the completion of the second round, the tournament will conclude with 18 holes Tuesday. It's the Blue Raiders' final event of the fall season.
