Blue Raiders drop 10-1 decision to Troy
Brentz solo shot accounts for lone MT runApril 16, 2010 · MT Athletic Communications
Brentz tied the game at 1 for the Blue Raiders in just his second at-bat and first start after missing 12 games due to an injury. Seniors Zach Hudson, Blake McDade and Drew Robertson, junior Will Skinner and Brentz each had one hit in the game.
"Andrew Dickinson for Troy threw and outstanding game, and so have the last three pitchers we have faces. We run into really good pitching and the problem is we have, I think, nine individuals doing exactly the same thing and not making adjustments. Pitching always dominates the game and tonight we were totally dominated. I just hope we have hit rock bottom because tonight we were totally dominated from the physical and mental aspect," head coach Steve Peterson said.
"Kenny could not hold them in check but even at 4-1, 5-1 it is not out of hand. I allowed the game to get out of hand because we have two more games. Even then we just mentally are not making good efforts to make adjustments. When you are facing those pitchers you have to try and make those adjustments. We are just in that funk right now and are not able, tonight, to match-up on the mound to keep it a 1-1 ballgame and then they had the big inning in the eighth." Peterson said.
Troy's Andrew Dickinson (4-3) worked a complete game striking out eight batters and holding the Blue Raider bats in check.
The Trojans had two players, T.J. Rivera and Todd McRae, drive in four runs each. McRae ended the night 3 for 5 while Chase Whitley went 2 fo3 and were the only two batters with multiple hits.
Troy loaded the bases to begin the game on an infield hit, hit by pitch and walk before Roberts recorded a swinging strikeout for the first out. The next batter hit a sacrifice fly to right allowing Bryant to score and put the Trojans up 1-0. Roberts got out of the inning after another fly ball to right field allowing just one run and one hit.
Troy broke the tie in the fourth after a single to right field by Peterson with two outs allowed Watson, who stole two bases to get in scoring position, to score and put the Trojans up 2-1.
The Trojans added two more in the fifth after a triple to the right field corner by Rivera, 4-1. Then McRae single to center scoring another run for Troy. Troy scored three runs on three hits in the inning to extend its lead to four.
In the seventh, McRae singled driving in Whitley, who double to centerfield to reach.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Hyde hit Rivera allowing one runs to score. Then the next batter singled to left bringing in two more runs. Troy added one more in the inning after a throwing error by Ford. Troy ended the eighth inning scoring four runs on one hit going ahead 10-1.
The Blue Raiders will play the second game of the series at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 17.
