MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee men's tennis coach Dale Short announced the signing of Brazilian Joao Paoliello to a scholarship agreement on Wednesday.

A Londrina, Brazil, native, Paoliello has been ranked No. 5 in Brazil in singles and No. 3 in doubles in the last two years. He has also been ranked in the Top 400 in the world in the junior rankings and trained at the Francos Tennis Academy outside of New Orleans, La., with former Blue Raider Lucas de Brito.

"Joao has a big serve and a very solid all-around game," Short said. "He has a lot of international tournament experience. I've been getting a lot of calls about him from other coaches because they were recruiting him as well. I expect him to contribute almost immediately and really provide our team some depth at the 4-6 spots."

Middle Tennessee returns five starters from last year as well as Rishan Kuruppu, who missed all of 2005 with a pair of injuries. The Blue Raiders are the defending Sun Belt champions after posting an 18-7 record last season and ranking as high as No. 21.

Short's squad begins the dual match season January 29 against Chattanooga at the Racquet Club of Murfreesboro.
