MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee softball team used excellent pitching to sweep a doubleheader against the TSU Tigers. The Blue Raiders won the first game, 3-2 before taking the second contest 6-1. MT advances to 17-23 on the season, 5-13 in conference play.
In the first game, Middle Tennessee scored three runs off eight hits and two errors in the winning effort. They left 10 runners on base. TSU's two runs came off seven hits with one error and seven left on base.
Lindsey Vander Lugt picked up her 15th win of the season throwing all seven innings, striking out six and giving up one free base.
Natalie Ysais wasted no time adding to her team leading 19 RBIs. The Riverside, Calif., native drove in the first run of the game in the first inning to score Corrie Abel from second. This gave the Blue Raiders a 1-0 lead. Abel is tied for the team lead in runs scored with 17.
The Tigers' Tamara Perkins answered in the third with a solo home run knotting the game at 1-1.
Ives added an insurance run in the fifth, coming around from second on a Caty Jutson infield single. This was Jutson's first RBI of the year. The game ended 3-2.
In the second game, Middle Tennessee scored six runs off nine hits, giving up no errors and leaving eight runners on base. TSU's run came off five hits and the team allowed two errors and left eight runners on base.
Middle Tennessee jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after one inning. Abel recorded her fourth hit of the day, then Caitlin McLure used her speed to turn a misplayed hit into her first triple of the season. Abel scored on the play. Dortch hit a single to the outfield to score McLure. Middle Tennessee added two more runs when Brittney Banania roped a pitch off the leg of TSU hurler, Hannah Schnelby, to score Ysais and Kaycee Popham.
In the fourth, the Blue Raider defense made three spectacular plays starting with McLure stretching out to make a running catch in the gap. Jessi Couch knocked down a hard shot to third, and then gunned a perfect throw to first for the second out. Abel ended the inning with a diving catch in left.
Middle Tennessee tacked on two more runs in the fifth as McLure's crafty base running distracted the Tiger fielders, allowing Kandra Singleton and Abel to score. The game ended 6-1.
Middle Tennessee will return to action tomorrow as they square off in an afternoon doubleheader with the UT-Martin Skyhawks beginning at 3 p.m. Full results and coverage will be available on GoBlueRaiders.com.
