NEW ORLEANS - Middle Tennessee saw its women's tennis season close with a 4-0 loss Friday to North Texas in the Sun Belt Conference quarterfinal round at the UNO Tennis Center in New Orleans, La. The Blue Raiders, seeded No. 7, dropped the doubles point and then three straight-set singles contests for the season-ending loss.
The No. 2-seeded Mean Green picked up the doubles point by winning at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Catalina Cruz and Barbora Vykydalova knocked off Anna Djananova and Yuiri Nomoto 8-2 at the No. 2 spot, while Middle Tennessee (11-10) played closer in the No. 3 meeting with Natalie Araya and Taylor Coffey dropping an 8-4 decision to Narine Kazarova and Madura Ranganathan.
North Texas (15-6) then clinched the victory with triumphs at the No. 2, 3 and 6 singles slots. Irina Paraschiv handed Djananova a 6-3, 6-0 setback at No. 2, while Marietta Bigus fell 6-4, 6-1 to Paula Dinuta during the No. 3 matchup.
Coffey forced an extra game in the first set but eventually was defeated 7-5, 6-0 during the No. 6 position contest against Cruz.
Middle Tennessee ends its most successful campaign since 2004. Three different Blue Raiders (Nomoto, Coffey and Araya) each registered double-digit singles victories, while Coffey and Djananova led the doubles pairings with nine wins.
