Blue Raiders add guard to 2010 class
Maryland native brings next year's group to fiveApril 27, 2010 · Athletic Communications
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee head women's basketball coach Rick Insell has announced the signing of Pasadena, Md., native Janay Brinkley to a National Letter of Intent to join the Blue Raider program beginning the fall of 2010. Brinkley's addition brings the total number of signees to five for next season.
"We are very, very fortunate to have her," Insell said. "She is an extremely good student who is also an extremely good basketball player. We were looking for a guard that can slash, is hard-nosed, can knock down the '3' and can run an offense because basically all we had at that position was Kortni (Jones). We feel very fortunate to be able to bring her in. She is going to end up being a great player for us. She has a great work ethic and is excited about being here. She comes from a good family and we are excited about having her."
Brinkley is a 5-6 point guard who will graduate this year from Digital Harbor High, where she transferred to after starting her high school career at Archbishop Spalding. She played for head coach Patrick McDonald at Digital Harbor and for coach James Nichols with the Team Unique Panthers club program.
Brinkley capped a stellar high school career by earning a nomination to the 2010 McDonald's All-American Game and leading her squad to the Baltimore city championship contest and the state 2A semifinals. She was a member of the Baltimore City team at the 2010 Baltimore City-Baltimore County Senior All-Star Game and was tabbed as a Player to Watch by BMoreHoops.
While playing at Spalding, Brinkley was selected as a 2009 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland Winter Basketball All-Star for the A Conference and garnered All-Met Honorable Mention recognition in 2008 and 2009. She received Third Team All-Anne Arundel County accolades by Capital-Gazette Communications and was listed as the No. 13 prospect in the MD/DC/VA/WV Region by The Real Basketball Report.
Brinkley will join previous Blue Raider signees Laken Leonard (Whitleyville, Tenn.), Jordyn Luffman (Lawrenceburg, Tenn.), Stephanie Myers (La Vergne, Tenn.) and Ebony Rowe (Lexington, Ky.) on the roster next season.
