Softball drops doubleheader at Lipscomb

McLure sets career stolen base record

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee softball team fell in their last non-conference doubleheader as the team lost 7-4 and 4-0 to the Lipscomb Lady Bison. MT drops to 19-30 on the season, 5-17 in the Sun Belt play. The Lady Bisons move to 44-10 overall, 18-2 in the Atlantic Sun.

In the first game, the Blue Raiders' four runs came off four hits. MT had two errors and left six on base. The Lady Bisons scored seven runs off nine hits with one error and nine left on base.

Janele Robinson took her eighth loss of the year, throwing three innings and allowing four earned runs and two walks, while striking out two batters. She would give way to Caty Jutson in the fourth, who calmed down the Bisons allowing just one earned run with two strikeouts.

The Lady Bison jumped out quickly when Kellie Sirus hit her 12th homer of the season to take a two run lead. Lipscomb added three more runs in the second off two hits. Robinson walked home one run before hitting the next batter to bring home the third run of the inning making the score 5-0 after two.

Lone runs in the third and fourth innings moved the score to 7-0.

Jessi Couch drove in her second run in as many games to help the Blue Raiders break the shutout in the seventh. The Bisons would load the bases before Brittney Banania laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Jessica Ives. Couch would be forced home on a bases-loaded walk to Caitlin McLure, and Kelsey Dortch drove in the last run of the game to make the final score 7-4.

Corrie Abel's singles in the first game gave her 170 hits for her career, passing Martha Davis for fourth all-time at Middle Tennessee.

The Lady Bisons' Kellie Sirus blasted a two run home off Lindsey Vander Lugt in the first inning of the second game. Lipscomb tacked on a third run in the second and the fourth in the fifth to make the score 4-0.

McLure led of the second game with a hit before stealing second and third in the inning for 69th and 70th steals of her career. She now sits in first place overall with the most stolen bases in Middle Tennessee.

In the second loss, Middle Tennessee had four hits, two errors, while leaving five runners on base. Lipscomb's four runs were scored off seven hits. The Lady Bisons had no errors and left five runners on base.

Vander Lugt's 19th loss on the year came off six innings of work. She struck out four batters and gave up four earned runs and two walks. The senior drops to 17-19 on the year with a 2.55 ERA and 186 strikeouts.

The Blue Raiders' will wrap up the 2010 regular season at home against the WKU Hilltoppers in doubleheader action. First pitch will go out at 1 p.m. Full results and coverage will be available on GoBlueRaiders.com.
