Whittaker picks up third saveMay 7, 2010 · MT Athletic Communications
Senior Blake McDade sealed the win with his two-run home run in the seventh. McDade ended the night 2 for 2 with three walks, two RBI and scored four runs.
"We got beat up from the fourth inning on and in the eighth and ninth Kevin came in and shut it down. We had a lot of walks and miscues in the infield and fortunately we were able to keep the ball in the ballpark and we were able to hit it out of the park. Bryce hit one and McDade had one and really put the game away," head coach Steve Peterson said.
Senior Kevin Whittaker came through on the mound allowing only one hit in 2.2 innings of work picking up his third save of the season. Freshman Daniel Palo entered the game in relief working two innings allowing four runs on five hits as he took the win improving to 1-1 on the season.
Middle Tennessee (27-18) had 13 hits on the night with junior Will Skinner leading the team with three. Skinner ended the night 3 for 5 with an RBI and run scored.
Juniors Justin Miller and Bryce Brentz guided the team as well. The pair each had two hits and drove in three runs with Miller recording a double and Brentz a home run. Sophomore Justin Guidry also had two hits on the night and drove in two runs.
"Looking at the box score it's really good to see the top of the order hitting well. We've got people scoring runs and that is so important. It's very important on a day like today that we did a good job scoring runs," Peterson said.
SIU (23-23) also had 13 hits on the night with Michael Stalter and Blake Pinnon leading the way with three hits each. On the mound, relief pitcher Ryan Bradley took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits in two innings of work.
Junior Bryce Brentz started the scoring in the third inning with his two-run shot to right field. The Blue Raiders took a 3-0 lead after recording three hits.
SIU quickly responded in the top of the fourth to tie the game at three. Then Montgomery scored the run to take the lead on a bases loaded walk.
The Blue Raiders took a 7-4 lead in the game in the fourth after scoring four runs on three hits.
In the fifth, SIU scored three more runs and the two schools traded 12 runs over the next three innings making the score 12-11 in favor of Middle Tennessee.
SIU closed the gap to one in the seventh but a two-run shot by McDade down the right field line in the bottom of the inning padded the lead 14-11 for the Blue Raiders.
Middle Tennessee will face SIU in the second game of the series at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 8.
