A look at the wide receivers
Group has to replace McClover, Honeycutt, and GeeJuly 30, 2010 · Athletic Communications
Battle to Watch: The most interesting position battle in the fall will be at the H spot between Harold Turner and Tavarres Jefferson. Both were good in spring drills as Jefferson was recovering from ankle surgery. The position will be hotly contested, but both should get plenty of playing time as the offense uses at least 10 receivers.
Spring Standout: Senior Garrett Andrews brought a good work ethic and consistency to practice each day. A very coachable player who pays attention to details and wants to be the best. Enjoyed a 35-catch season in 2009 and is poised to have a more productive year in 2010 as Dwight Dasher's main target.
Coach Watts on the wide receivers
"The biggest challenge this unit faces is that they are largely unproven. We return some guys who have made plays, but there will still be some big shoes to fill when you have to replace guys like Patrick Honeycutt and Chris McClover. However, this is a fun group to coach because they come to play every day and seem determined to succeed. That success will depend greatly on how dedicated they are during the summer months."
Wide Receiver (X)
SANCHO MCDONALD (Junior) - Coming off a spring where he improved in all phases ... Showed the coaches a much better work ethic ... Has the ability to make big plays for the offense ... Coaches want his leadership role to improve.
RICHARD DRAKE (r-Freshman) - A much-improved receiver from a year ago but still learning how to compete daily ... Needs to be better fundamentally and increase his work ethic over the summer to maximize playing time.
JAMAR BROWN (Junior) - A transfer from Feather River CC ... Got better with each practice during the spring ... Was really grasping offense until he suffered a hamstring injury and missed the last five practices ... Getting in shape and mastering the position will be key for him during the summer.
Wide Receiver (H)
HAROLD TURNER (r-Sophomore) - Enjoyed a good spring and showed the coaches he can make big plays ... Proved last season he could be a playmaker in the offense ... Needs to improve his run blocking and be more consistent catching the football.
TAVARRES JEFFERSON (Sophomore) - Competed hard every day in spring practice but is still learning the nuances of the position ... Is just getting back to full speed following ankle surgery ... Needs to get in great shape over the summer to seize his full potential ... Possesses good hands and could be a major contributor this fall.
Wide Receiver (Y)
TYLER MASON (Junior) - Showed competitiveness and toughness in his first spring as a Blue Raider ... Competes in every drill and never takes a play off ... Can make people miss and can create explosive plays for the offense.
SHANE BLISSARD (r-Junior) - Continued his steady improvement during the spring from a year ago ... Understands the offense but needs to keep working on his route running and be more consistent catching the ball.
WES CALDWELL (Senior) - Coaches did not get a good read on him during the spring due to his commitment to baseball ... Has experience and will be counted on for leadership.
Wide Receiver (Z)
GARRETT ANDREWS (Senior) - Ended the spring as the most complete receiver on the team ... Is very consistent ... Has a knack for making tough catches in traffic and shown the coaches he can produce the big play ... Needs to be the leader of the receiving corps.
ARTHUR WILLIAMS (r-Freshman) - Works very hard but struggled in the spring catching the football with consistency ... Has shown improvement but needs a good summer to see quality playing time.
ANDREW BANKS (r-Junior) - A smart receiver who can play all four positions ... Needs to get stronger so he can be a more effective run blocker ... Is very athletic.
