Blue Raiders looking to rebound against Jayhawks

September 7, 2010 · Athletic Communications
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - After falling in three hard-fought matches over the weekend, the Middle Tennessee volleyball team will match-up with the Kansas Jayhawks in Lawrence, Kan.

"We beat Kansas here last year, and I know they will have revenge on their minds at their place," said head coach Matt Peck. "Our kids have to be ready to play a good match. They're a Big 12 team, and getting a win over them on the road would be huge for the program. We're gonna give them everything we have."

Last season, the Blue Raiders posted a 3-1 win over Kansas at Alumni Memorial Gym in the season opener. Izabela Kozon served as a catalyst for MT with a match-high 15 kills and tying for the team lead in digs with eight.

This year, the Jayhawks sit at 7-0 after winning tournaments at Creighton and at home.

Middle Tennessee is 1-1 all time against Kansas and holds a 5-3 mark against teams from the Big 12.

The Blue Raiders are 3-4 after going 1-3 in the sixth annual Blue Raider Bash, winning over defending Conference USA champion Southern Miss, but falling to Duke and Miami in four sets and Auburn in five.

Middle Tennessee has been led by reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week Izabela Kozon with 105 kills. The senior has led the team in kills in all but one match and was named to the All-Tournament teams at both the State Farm Illini Classic and Blue Raider Bash. She's also been a force defensively with 55 digs, ranking second on the team in the category.

Brynne Henderson and Lindsay Cheatham have been forces for the MT defense this season. Henderson leads the team with 101 digs and set career highs for the category on back-to-back days over the weekend, recording 20 against Southern Miss and 21 vs. Miami. Cheatham, who has taken on a larger role this season for Middle Tennessee, has supplemented her 55 kills with outstanding defense at the net, tallying 30 total blocks, including six of the solo variety.

The Blue Raiders are scheduled to play Kansas at 6:30 PM at Horesji Family Athletics Center in Lawrence, Kan. Full coverage after the match will be available at GoBlueRaiders.com.
