BURLINGTON, IA - Middle Tennessee opened its fall golf season on Sunday by shooting an opening round 294 at the Golfweek Conference Challenge. The all-star tournament is being played on the par 72, Spirit Hollow Golf Course and will cover 54 holes.

Host Iowa is the first round leader after posting an impressive 20-under par 268, while NC State is second at 5-under par.

"Iowa just shot a tremendous number today," said Head Coach Whit Turnbow. "Unfortunately in this sport we can't play defense because if we could I would have put a box-and-one on Iowa's player who shot a 64.

"I have a good group of guys that are still learning. I fully expect them to play better each day. They played hard but just made too many large numbers which are hard to overcome."

Senior Jason Millard led the way with a 1-under par 71 to tie for 13th overall, while junior Hunter Green and true freshman Brett Patterson carded a 1-over par 73 to tie for 32nd.

Freshman Jordan Jennings put up a 77 to tie for 56th, while fellow freshman Paul Sansom turned in an 80 to tie for 69th.

The Blue Raiders will begin the second round Monday at 9:00 AM.
