"What a great way to end this tournament," head coach Melissa Schaub said. "Everyone competed hard all weekend and it paid off today, as we were victorious across the board against some strong competition. I am proud of everyone for putting the time in during practice and seeing what it takes to be successful."
Sophomore Yuiri Nomoto had no problems in her Flight 1 singles championship match against top-seed Vera Shkundina of Kennesaw State. Nomoto, the bracket's No. 2 seed, dropped just two games in picking up the 6-1, 6-1 triumph.
Junior Marietta Bigus battled harder to pull out her straight-set victory, but she earned a 6-2, 6-4 decision over UAB's Caroline Faught to capture the Flight 2 consolation title.
Both players were also victorious in doubles action to start the day. Bigus, pairing with Chattanooga's Charlotte Bossy in a mixed pair, registered an 8-3 win against the Lady Mocs' duo of Jenna Nurik and Shaina Singh, the No. 1 tandem, to clinch the Flight 2 crown.
Nomoto and junior Alex Dachos dispatched Wofford's Haley Baird and Rachel Cohen, 8-1, to take home the Flight 1 doubles prize.
Middle Tennessee will conclude the fall tournament campaign at the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals, Oct. 14-18, in Knoxville, Tenn.
