Women's Tennis Takes 4-1 Victory

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee won the doubles point and three of the four completed singles matches, defeating Tennessee Tech, 4-1, in women's tennis action Sunday night at the Racquet Club of Murfreesboro.

Middle Tennessee ended a three-match losing streak, moving the squad to 4-5 on the season.

The Blue Raiders won the first two completed doubles matches to pick up the point.

Middle Tennessee's Pooja Kommireddi and Elvira Yusupova defeated Maia Semerdjieva and Evgenia Yartseva, 8-0, at No. 3, before Ann-Kristin Siljestrom and Kelly Adams won 8-3 at No. 2 over Margot Carter and Kay Ngiam. At No. 1, Alet Boonzaaier and Marina Tasheva prevailed 8-4 over Marlene Chemin and Claudia Szabo.

In singles Tennessee Tech won the first completed match but the Blue Raiders picked up the next three to take the victory.

Boonzaaier defeated Chemin at No. 1, 6-2, 6-4, but Yusupova came right back with a 6-4, 6-3, triumph over Carter at No. 3. Adams won 6-3, 6-4, over Marine Ruiz de Guana, at No. 4, and Szabo finished off the victory with a 6-0, 7-5, win over Tasheva at No. 2.

"We played well. It was good to win because we've all been sick," assistant coach Carien Venter said, filling in for sick head coach Alison Ojeda. "Tennessee Tech was a better club that what you would expect and we stayed focused and got the win.

"Claudia came back from 4-1 in the second set to finish off the match and Elvira played really smart."

The Blue Raiders play at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on March 3 and Houston on March 8 before returning home to face Murray State on March 11.
