Blue Raiders fall 97-90 to Campbell

Washington scores 20; Four post double figure scoring

AUBURN, Ala. - For the second straight game Middle Tennessee mounted a rally late in the game but could not pull out the win as the team fell 97-90 to Campbell Friday evening in its opening game at the Global Sports Hoops Showcase.

Senior James Washington led the charge scoring 20 points after connecting on 10 of 13 free throw attempts. The St. Louis, Mo., native went 4 for 8 from the field and had five assists. R-sophomore Jason Jones and freshman Kerry Hammonds also had double figure scoring with 12 points each and sophomore James Gallman added 11.

The Blue Raiders shot 45.9 percent from the field but could not stop Campbell who posted an impressive 64 percent from the field. The Camels were also 8 for 13 from behind the arc for 61.5 percent. Middle Tennessee did lead Campbell in free throw percentage, rebounds and steals.

Junior Kyle Hunt led the team with seven rebounds while Jason Jones and freshman Shawn Jones added five each.

Middle Tennessee used a 17-3 run to take a 16-point lead, 27-11, with 12:26 remaining in the first half. Campbell kept fighting and took a 35-33 lead after a 13-6 run and carried the momentum into the end of the half outscoring Middle Tennessee 11-6 in the last five minutes of play, 46-39.

Hammonds led all Blue Raider scorers with nine points after going 3 for 5 from behind the arc. Middle Tennessee shot 41.4 percent from the field and 53.5 percent from the three-point line but Campbell posted a 53.6 overall percentage from the field.

The Blue Raiders came out of the gate quick in the second half scoring eight straight and then tied the game at 57 after a trey by Washington.

Campbell took over from there maintaining at least a three-point lead for the rest of the game. The Blue Raiders got the score to within six with 34 seconds left but with fouls were not able to close the gap.

Middle Tennessee will be back in action at the Global Sports Hoops Showcase on Saturday, Nov. 20 when it faces Samford at 2 p.m.
