MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee dropped the doubles point in a tiebreaker and the first three completed singles matches, falling 4-3 to UAB in women's tennis action Friday afternoon at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center.
The Blue Raiders (7-13) dropped to 3-4 at home this season with a tough loss, taking a lead in the deciding doubles match before falling in a tiebreaker. The Blazers (12-5) won the first point of the match with victories at Nos. 1 and 3, including the deciding match at No. 3 in a tiebreaker.
UAB's Ornischa Maier-Knapp and Julia von Samson defeated Marlene Chemin and Claudia Szabo, 8-4, at No. 1, but Middle Tennessee's Ann-Kristin Siljestrom and Kelly Adams came back with a 9-7 victory at No. 2 over Gulsah Esen and Annemieke Elsholz.
Blue Raiders Elvira Yusupova and Pooja Kommireddi went up 7-5 over Antonia Nugent and Samrin Tanzeem, but the Blazers came back to force a tiebreaker and win, 7-3, in the breaker.
In singles UAB won the first three completed matches to take the victory.
Maier-Knapp defeated Szabo, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 1, and Nugent won 6-4, 6-0, at No. 5 over Adams. Esen won the deciding match with a 7-5, 6-0, triumph over Yusupova at No. 4.
Middle Tennessee's Siljestrom defeated Elsholz, 6-1, 0-6, 6-3, at No. 3, and Kommireddi posted her 26th victory of the season with a 5-7, 6-0, 10-5, triumph over Tanzeem at No. 6. Chemin won the first set, was up 5-0 in the second set but lost in a tiebreaker, only to rebound and win the supertiebreaker, 10-5.
Middle Tennessee hosts 55th-ranked Marshall Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center in the final home match of the season.
