Freshman leads Blue Raiders in tournament opener
Fisherback throws 9 K's in 3-2 win
February 25, 2011 · Athletic CommunicationsAUBURN, Ala. -Middle Tennessee freshman Jordyn Fisherback was supreme in her first start at the 2011 War Eagle Classic on Friday in Auburn, Ala., shutting down the Marshall Thundering Herd 3-2 off a career-high nine strikeouts. The Blue Raiders advance to 3-5 on the season.
After spotting Marshall one run in the first, the Blue Raiders jumped on the Herd early, scoring three runs in the second inning. Power-hitting freshman Kayla Toney led off the side with a double to right. Back-to-back Marshall errors would score Toney and Natalie Ysais. A single by Kandra Singleton later scored Jessi Couch. Brittney Banania then doubled, but her teammates could not get her home.
This would be all Fisherback needed as the Greenville, Ohio native stopped the Herd in their tracks, going the distance with just two earned runs allowed. Fisherback moves to 2-1 with 25 K's and a 4.91 ERA.
Senior Corrie moved three hits closer to making history, going 3-4 in the game with a double. She is batting .484 on the season and needs just three hits to become to the all-time career leader in the categories.
