AUBURN, Ala. - The Middle Tennessee softball team swept a doubleheader on the first day of the 2011 War Eagle Classic on Friday at Jane B. Moore Field in Auburn, Ala. The Blue Raiders advance to 4-5 on the season.
In the first game, freshman Jordyn Fisherback was supreme in her first start at the 2011 War Eagle Classic on Friday in Auburn, Ala., shutting down the Marshall Thundering Herd 3-2 off a career-high nine strikeouts. The Blue Raiders advance to 3-5 on the season.
After spotting Marshall one run in the first, the Blue Raiders jumped on the Herd early, scoring three runs in the second inning. Power-hitting freshman Kayla Toney led off the side with a double to right. Back-to-back Marshall errors would score Toney and Natalie Ysais. A single by Kandra Singleton later scored Jessi Couch. Brittney Banania then doubled, but her teammates could not get her home.
This would be all Fisherback needed as the Greenville, Ohio native stopped the Herd in their tracks, going the distance with just two earned runs allowed. Fisherback moves to 2-1 with 25 K's and a 4.91 ERA.
Senior Corrie moved three hits closer to making history, going 3-4 in the game with a double. She is batting .484 on the season and needs just three hits to become to the all-time career leader in the categories.
In the second game, the Blue Raiders quickly jumped on the Racer of Murray State. Entering the bottom half of the first, MT trailed 1-0. After subsequent Nina Davenport, Singleton and Toney walks, Natalie Ysais was hit by pitch to knot the score at 1-1. After a Kaycee Popham fielder's choice, Kelsey Dortch and and Banania had back-to-back RBI singles, making the tally 4-2. Davenport then worked the bases-loaded walk, bringing the score to 5-1.
After Kaycee Popham knocked an RBI double in the second to make the score 6-1, the Racers roared back, scoring five runs off Janele Robinson in the top of the third. The runs were scored off four hits. MT took the lead in the bottom half of the inning, when Davenport notched her third RBI of the season, driving in Dortch from second.
In the fourth, Toney, Popham and Dortch all doubled to help lead the team to score four runs and give the team a 11-6 lead. Ysais and Popham each had RBIs in the inning.
Caty Jutson came in relief of Robinson in the fifth to get her second win of the season to move to 2-2 on the year. She struck out two batters in 2.2 innings of work.
MSU took two back in the fifth making it 11-8, going to the bottom of the frame.
Dortch ended the affair in walk-off fashion with a three-run homer in the bottom of the frame. Popham and Dever previously drove in runs in the inning. Popham went an impressive four for four in the second game.
MT wins their 2011 series with Murray State 2-1.
