March 5, 2011 · Athletic Communications

DADE CITY, Fla. - The Middle Tennessee men's golf team had an 11-under par round of 277 on Saturday to extend its lead at the USF Invitational to 20 strokes entering Sunday's final round. All five players are ranked in the top 12 of the field.

The Blue Raiders have owned the Lake Jovita Golf Course through 36 holes by posting a cumulative total of 551 which is 25-under par. North Texas, ranked 28th nationally, is 20 strokes back in second place while Villanova is third. Florida State and Arkansas State are tied for fourth, 23 strokes behind.

"When you don't count a 73 like we did today and yesterday, then you must be playing some fantastic golf," added Head Coach Whit Turnbow. "We came in wanting to attack and keep the pressure on and I could not be more proud of these guys for doing exactly that. I have said for a long time that when we are on, we are tough to beat. Right now we are definitely on but we can't let up Sunday."

Over Middle Tennessee's last three rounds of play dating back to the final round of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, it is a combined 31-under par.

Junior Hunter Green carded a second straight 5-under par 67 to grab the overall lead by two strokes over Daniel Mazziotta from Florida Gulf Coast. Green, who had a 32 on the back nine, is chasing his second career victory.

Brad Simons and Paul Sansom are both tied for eighth with 140 totals. Simons, who shared the tournaments first round lead, had a 73 Saturday that did not make the Blue Raiders' top four scores. Sansom, who had a 33 on the back nine, added a second straight 70 and is on pace for his career-best finish.

Freshman Brett Patterson fired a 1-under 71 in the second round and is in 11th place.

Senior Jason Millard had three birdies over his last four holes for a round of 69. Millard is tied for 12th and is 13-under par over his last five rounds of play.

The final round will begin at 6:30 AM Central Sunday with a shot gun start.
