October 26, 2001 · MT Media Relations
Winston-Salem, NC - Middle Tennessee's Stacy Varnell split her two qualifying singles round matches Thursday at the 2001 Omni Hotel Southeast Regional Championships on the campus Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, NC.

Varnell defeated North Carolina State's Kristen Nicholls 6-3, 6-0 in her first match. Coastal Carolina's No. 1 singles player Mezina Bajrambasic later toppled Varnell 7-6(2), 1-6, 2-6.

"I think Stacy played extremely well, " said Middle Tennessee head women's tennis coach Randy Holden. "She just missed making it out of the qualifying rounds and into the singles draw."

Middle Tennessee's Manon Kruse, seeded No. 14 in the tournament, will play her first singles match today at 8 a.m. against Kentucky's Lauren Rookledge. She will then join Varnell in doubles play, who are seeded No. 7, at 2 p.m. for their match.
