BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Middle Tennessee softball team dropped their Saturday doubleheader on the final day of competition at the FAU Invitational.
The Blue Raiders fell the first game 5-4 to Purdue, before losing 2-0 to Rutgers. MT moves to 5-13 on the season.
After an empty frame in the first inning of the contest with Purdue, Kayla Toney got the Raiders the earlier lead on a home run over the left field wall. This was her second homer on the season and sixth RBI. MT led 1-0 at after two.
Purdue took two off the Middle Tennessee in the third, before MT scored three runs off three hits and a Boilmaker error in the fifth. Kelsey Dortch scored the first run on throwing error that put third. Nina Davenport reached on a well-placed bunt. Jessi Couch drove in Banania on the following play for her second RBI of the year. Davenport also advanced on the play. On the following play, Corrie Abel drove Davenport in a right field single. This was Abel's 12th RBI and Davenport's sixth run-scored off an Abel RBI this season. Middle Tennessee took a 4-2 lead into the seventh inning.
It would not be the Raiders' day as Purdue roared back in the seventh with two outs. The Boilermakers score three runs to steal victory from the 5-4.
In the game, Dortch stole two bags. This is the only time in her she has two steals in a single contest.
Pitcher Jordyn Fisherback was saddled with the loss, moving to 3-4 on the season. In the contest, she allowed four earned runs off nine hits, while striking out five and walking two.
The second contest of the day against Rutgers was a true pitcher's-duel with MT starter Caty Jutson and RU hurler Megan Williams going blow-for-blow through the full contest.
Jutson threw arguably her best game of the season, going 6.1 innings, while giving up two runs off seven hits. She struck out one and walked two.
Unfortunately, Williams was up to the task, holding the Blue Raiders to no runs off four hits.
The Blue Raiders return to action on Tuesday as they open conference play against FIU. Full results and coverage will be available on GoBlueRaiders.com and Twitter.com/MT_Softball.
