MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee women's tennis captured the doubles point but only won once in singles action in dropping a 5-2 decision to Arkansas State Friday afternoon at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center in Murfreesboro, Tenn.
"We are competing hard but need to work on finishing the job each and every time out," head coach Melissa Schaub said. "We cannot afford to take a day off, especially against conference opponents, if we want to get positive results."
The Blue Raiders started the afternoon by taking two of the three doubles contests to garner the point and claim a 1-0 lead. The No. 2 Middle Tennessee (5-6) pair of Marietta Bigus and Lexi Brand handed Biljana Miloshevska and Janie Nowland an 8-2 setback to begin the competition. The point then fell in the Blue Raiders' favor as the No. 3 tandem of Alex Dachos and Carla Nava knocked off Jenny Herring and Menna Kamal by an identical 8-2 score.
Arkansas State (7-4) then rallied with its five singles victories, limiting Middle Tennessee to just a triumph in the first match to finish. Nava posted a 6-2, 6-1 win against the Red Wolves' Nowland at the No. 3 slot.
Each of the five ASU singles victories came in straight sets, as the Blue Raiders completed their fourth match in a row at home.
Middle Tennessee will return to action at Noon Sunday when it plays host to Memphis.
