Softball takes North Texas doubleheader

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The Middle Tennessee softball team won their first series of the 2011 season on Friday, sweeping a doubleheader against the North Texas Green Mean at Blue Raider Field. The Blue Raider advance to 7-16 on the season , 2-3 in conference.
MT took the first game 5-4 and the second 6-4.
After UNT took a four-run lead after the first four innings of the first game, Natalie Ysais roped a double to center to plate Kaycee Popham from first. This was Ysais' 11th RBI of the year. The score was 4-1 at that point.
Middle Tennessee then scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. Kelsey Dortch recorded two RBIs on a hard-hit triple deep to right-center field, bringing home Kristi Marquez and Nina Davenport. Marquez and Davenport both singled earlier in the side. Kaycee Popham put the Raiders on top with a home run to right, scoring Corrie Abel. Popham has three home runs in the last three games.
Starter Jordyn Fisherback closed the door on the Mean Green in the sixth and seventh innings to earn her fourth win of the season. Fisherback gave up four earned runs off eights hits, while striking out three and walking one.
In the second game, North Texas took the early lead on the Blue Raiders, recording two runs in the first inning.
Middle Tennessee's first hit of the game came in the fourth, when Abel doubled to center. This double gave her 269 total bases for her career. She is now just one shy of Martha Davis' Middle Tennessee record of 270 in a career.
Junior Kelsey Woodruff tied the game at two in the fifth in her first career at bat when sent a towering two-run homer over the right field all. Before coming to Middle Tennessee, Woodruff was a standout slugger in her time at Motlow State.
The Blue Raiders poured on the offense in the following frame, scoring four runs off three hits and three walks. Kayla Toney tallied three RBIs on a deep center field home run. This was Toney's third bomb of the season and gave her 10 RBIs on the season. Nina Dever also RBIed in the inning. MT took a commanding 6-2 lead at that point.
Janele Robinson threw strong in 6.1 innings of work. In her first win of the season, she struck out four batters and walked just one. Caty Jutson came in relief and shut down North Texas in the seventh for her first save of the season.
